or areas that are nice. Applying to council for housing as dh is leaving HM Forces and has new employment there. I havent a clue about the area but know some people view fareham as being the end of the earth however we have no choice but to move there. So any helpful advice. The areas we have been given are:

North fareham
south fareham
portchester
stubbington
tichfield/common
whiteley
warsash
locksheath
park gate
sarisbury
knowle

Also any areas you suggest as being nice are there any parts of that area you woulnd not consider.

Thankyou for anyone who replies

My db and dsil used to live in Locksheath and it was lovely. Been round warsach, Titchfield and Whiteley and they seemed nice too.

I'm sure some-one else who has better knowledge will be round soon.

thankyou i will tick my list although not hopeful of getting anywhere with the council but still gives us an idea if we have to rent.

I know two families who live in the social housing part of Knowle Village. One of them has two young children. They find it OK. There is a shop, a play park and a pre-school starting. I would say essential to have a car, as it is reached by a LONG access road.

lou031205 · 09/06/2008 14:58

That sounds a bit snobby 'social housing part of Knowle Village', but what I mean is that there is an 'excutive home' part - 5 bed houses, etc, and a part with smaller, social housing homes.

davidtennantsmistress · 09/06/2008 15:01

the council will be v v unhelpful - ther'es a 2 yr list, and if like me oyu want a 2 bed you ahve no chance unless it's a flat - and even then ther'es no hope - 6 propertys a week go on (max usually) and ther'es 100+ people chasing the same ones.

you might be lucky, but then again i'm on the list n have been since last sept.

rent wise you'll get more in fareham than you will my side (I pay more to live where I do as it's in a good area, and I know it) i'd rather live here than in fareham.

the social housing in this village is not so good thou. can give you tips on east/central farehm but don't want to give away too much about where I live, feel free to CAT me thou.

Stubbington is lovely but full of old people.

Portchester is nice, good senior school.

Titchfield lovely, not a lot there (think quaint village) but nice.

Whiteley is ok but imo is one big housing estate. And the traffic can be horrendous.

Warsash/Locks Heath/Sarisbury/Park Gate are all ok but again traffic can be awful as they are on the rat run to Southampton.

Can you let us know where your DH will be working as I think that would influence where you want to live - as Fareham/Gosport/Titchfield etc on a peninsula the commute could be hideous for him. And what age are your children, re schools, groups etc?

davidtennantsmistress · 09/06/2008 15:02

should say thou if your'e over 60 those houses come up on a reg basis - to give you some sorts of ideas the local housing list is

www.fareham.gov/letselect.

scaryteacher · 09/06/2008 16:03

Titchfield is v nice, (mil lives there). I think the council estate is called Bellfield.

Whiteley newish, I think there are issues with getting kids into the primary as it used to be oversubscribed. You will need a car if you live in Whitley and at Knowle (I remember doing a nursing auxiliary job on the pyscho geriatric wards there post A levels!).

Fareham is fine , I grew up there and fail to see why people think it is the arse end of the universe. I'd far rather live there than in some parts of Plymouth (North Prospect or St Budeaux, or off Union Street for example).

If you can get somewhere near Peak Lane/The Avenue, then you'd hopefully be in the Ranvilles catchment for primary. Afaik, it's a good primary still.

TodayToday · 09/06/2008 22:07

Most of those places are Ok - I'd probably leave off Portchester, South Fareham, Locksheath and Parkgate.

The primary schools and secondary school in Stubbington is good. Whitely is a newish town which built too many houses and not a big enough primary school.

North Fareham has a nice primary school and is in the catchment for Cams Hall which is also a pretty good secondary school.

Where are you moving from?

plusone · 10/06/2008 14:39

we are moving from plymouth and dh has a job in collingwood. We are applying to plymouth and fareham council as we are living in mq's at the moment and are entitled to be rehoused obviously if what they offer if we get an offer is awful then we will have no choice but to rent priviately.

One of ds's friends lives in Stubbington & it seems nice there just a bit quiet.

can't help with anywhere else as have not been.

AngeG · 10/06/2008 14:48

I live in Locks Heath and am happy here. Quite like Warsash, Park Gate, Sarisbury. Don't know much about the others. It would be quite easy to get to Collingwood from here without having to go onto the motorway or encountering too much traffic.

Whiteley tends to be a nightmare to get in and out of and if you have children it can be a problem getting them into the school.

Can't think of anthing else.

davidtennantsmistress · 10/06/2008 16:32

collingwood i'd look at gosport (NOT ROWNER) stubbington, might be worth applyin to gosport council as well.

to come this side of fareham you'd have a half hour drive into work (or so - in rush hour it's not v good as ther'es only really one way in from here) so i'd stay the other side - titchfield/stubbington/gosport etc, maybe lee on solent actually.

but I don't really know anything about those areas thou and what they're like to live in/the schooling etc.

maidamess · 10/06/2008 16:35

I grew up in Fareham! North Fareham, with the local schools being Uplands and Harrison. If you have kids will you have to think about catchment areas?

Stubbington is lovely, near the beach too, but def. a car or bus journey to decent shops .

wessexgirl · 10/06/2008 16:35

I used to live in Gosport and we went to the Collingwood bonfire night party because it was walking distance.

Closer, but you'd really have to choose your area with care there - Fareham is 'nicer' (or at least it was, bear in mind this was the 1970s).

maidamess · 10/06/2008 16:36

My bil used to live in Knowle Village, lovely houses but you would need a car as the previous poster said.

Sidge · 10/06/2008 21:22

If he will be working at Collingwood I really wouldn't look too far afield. His journey into work would be horrific if you lived in Park Gate/Whiteley/Warsash/Sarisbury.

I would recommend some areas of Fareham, Portchester, Stubbington, Titchfield, Lee on the Solent or some bits of Gosport. If you see any houses in Gosport tell me where they are and I'll tell you if they are to be avoided!!

TodayToday · 11/06/2008 10:07

For Collingwood I'd go for Stubbington, Lee on Solent (there's a massive housing development between Fareham and Lee on Solent with a mix of social and private housing) or North Fareham to make the journey to work bearable. It's probably still quicker to cycle. Collingwood has a great swimming pool iirc.

I would stay right away from Gosport personally.
