Relocating - The Wirral

Hi all

Currently living in Surrey, been here 25yrs but originally from North Wales so know The Wirral a bit, largely from travelling through it or days when we went to a nightclub there in the 90’s! I am planning to relocate in the summer when my youngest finishes her A levels.

My office will be in Liverpool (Moorfields) but I drive and see there is free parking at Merseyrail stations (and i’m an early bird so will get a space no issue). My youngest will be off to uni, so no need for good schools so don’t want to pay a premium for an area with good schools, but equally want a safe place to live, so not high crime rate. I am not 100% set on The Wirral, Liverpool itself still an option but leaning toward The Wirral as have family and old school friends in North Wales so The Wirral would be a good compromise.

Any suggestions? Saw some nice affordable houses in Port Sunlight / Bromborough. A friend has suggested Oxton. Not fussed on a beach location, and lived in noisy places all my life so again don’t mind too much if near main road / railway lines / flight path.

Budget is 325k max. Like a detached if can stretch, but not ruling out semi’s / terraced. I have a dog, and want a garden with grass (so not a paved yard which did rule out some areas I liked in South Liverpool). 3 bedrooms so my adult DC can come and stay. Space for home office be nice, but I do prefer working from the office so getting to office higher priority than a home office. So an area where I can buy a house with those priorities.

Thanks in advance.

Look along the merseyrail line. New Brighton is great, or I’d look at Hoylake or West Kirby if you want a good sense of community and lots of independent shops, cafes etc. You’ll love it.

I’d swerve Oxton. The village is lovely but it’s surrounded by well, Birkenhead.

I’d look along the train lines, so Bromborough, Spital, Bebington on the Chester line or West Kirby, Hoylake, Meols on the WK line. All of those are in grammar catchment areas but they are also the nicest areas and easiest for commuting.

There are more quaint areas like Thornton Hough, Raby Mere, Frankby, Irby etc but they’re more rural and you’d need a car to commute. And they’re more pricey.

Overall, the Wirral is a fantastic place to live - a stone’s throw from Liverpool and Chester, beautiful countryside, beaches and woodland, and North Wales on the doorstep. I don’t understand why everyone doesn’t want to live here!

We're just about to move from South Liverpool to West Kirby (and will be commuting back to Liverpool). I'm nervous and hope we like it, but everyone we've spoken, to loves the area. Other nice areas mentioned but just weren't right for us include Meols, Hoylake and Heswall. Good luck!

Thanks. I went to West Kirby for a funeral once and thought it was a beautiful little town. Will check out Hoylake too

Thanks. I was thinking the same about Oxton as when you look on the map, it’s more Birkenhead and I definitely want to swerve there.

Saw they are doing some regeneration in Bromborough / Port Sunlight and building 1000 new houses, and promenade etc. There’s other houses well within my budget too that were probably built in the last 5yrs or so that would be ideal. I need to find some time to come up and visit over christmas break to check out areas. I have a car so don’t mind driving into stations etc too, but would prefer to be walking distance to merseyrail line.

How exciting. I had South Liverpool on my list of places to live but the houses are much nicer on the wirral. Will get more for my money and commute is still short. Good luck.

I have family who live in the area. I would say, if you're driving to a station with a car park (which many of them have) the areas I would choose are parts of Bromborough and Bebington including Spital, Heswall and West Kirby (I say parts as all those areas have very nice and not so nice parts).

Raby Mere and Thornton Hough - slightly more rural but not too far from anywhere if you have a car.

Parkgate, Ness, Burton, Little Neston - Cheshire and not under Wirral Council (Cheshire West & Chester) but still on the peninsula. Not far away from Hooton and some of the other stations you could park in.

Thanks so much. Yes Bromborough is currently top of my list, can be door to door to office within half hour. Do drive so can consider other locations not that close to a train station but i’d prefer to walk to a station. Just have to bide my time now until the new year and I can start actually viewing houses.

Just to update, i’ve reserved a new build in Port Sunlight - right near the Riverside park, with gorgeous mersey views 5 mins around the corner. 16 mins to my office and 25 mins drive to family & friends. Should be ready in late summer which fits in perfectly with my plan to move from July onwards once DD finishes 6th form. We are both super excited. Originally had my heart set on the north west coast (Formby, Birkdale, Waterloo etc) but my family are in North Wales so the Wirral made sense. It felt like a compromise until I went to view, I was sold by the area, but the house is gorgeous too.

Sure i’ll be asking lots of advice over the next few months. Currently renting a flat, and I cannot tell you how much i’m looking forward to having a garden and not having to walk the dog at 6am for toilet stop!!

Glad you found somewhere OP. In case for whatever reason you need to search again though, I’d respectfully disagree with the previous poster about Oxton.

I used to live there, still have friends there, and would move back again in a heart beat.

The fact it’s surrounded by Birkenhead has no bearing on how lovely it is. I felt safer walking around there than almost any other place I’ve ever lived (and I’ve lived in a lot of places).

It’s a gorgeous village. Beautiful Victorian and Georgian architecture. A real community feel and village atmosphere, but with Liverpool just 15 minutes away. Boutique shops, coffee shops, restaurants. And so much going on - farmers market, Oxton Secret Gardens.

Perfect for dog walkers as lovely leafy streets, and parks like The Arno with rose gardens and woodland, and so many other green spaces around. It’s very peaceful.

There’s a reason they call it the Hampstead of the north west.

I miss it so much!
