Steam ovens

I’m redoing our kitchen and considering a steam oven. I currently have two normal / convection ovens but am considering one normal convection oven and one smaller steam one. Are these good? Food delicious and healthier as claimed? Or am I getting sucked in by false advertising?

I have a steam oven. I do use it (not much!), but I would never have it instead of a second convection oven. Anything I can do on there I can do with less faff on a hob based steamer. I only use it because it's there, I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't.

I try to minimize steam in the house, eg I dont use a steam mop as I don't want excess moisture in the house.

We have a convection oven and a convection oven with a steam function. I’ve never had cause to use the steam function! It’s been about a year. But I suppose it’s not to know it’s there if I want it?

Sister has one, hardly ever used and on the rare occasions it has been, it tells her off (clean me !). So I don’t think I’d bother.

We had one in our last house and very rarely used it. They're great for bread, if you're a baker, but I rarely bothered otherwise. And truthfully, I get results that are basically just as good with a Le Creuset bread cloche.

In our new house I ended up going with one really big convection oven and one smaller convection oven and have been happy with that.

I had a NEFF oven with a basic steam function. Basically fill a shallow bowl in the bottom of the oven and switch on the steamer.
It definitely makes better bread and pastries.

I’ve spec’d one for my next kitchen (being installed next year) after going into both the Siemens and Miele experience centres and seeing the functionality.

Currently using a Ninja which has a steam bake / steam roast (etc) functions which I use at least once a week and looking forward to having a full size oven, not being constrained to the small space inside the ninja. So worth it for us, I am so looking forward to it. But it really depends on how much you like cooking and how inclined you are to experiment as well. Worth searching on steam baking on you tube.

We had one rarely used. So don’t have one in our new home. We do have two normal ovens though instead. For steaming we use a traditional bamboo steamer on the hob.
