Ancient doorbell

I'm about to decorate my hall and looking at this old doorbell chime. It's 40 years old and not in use. I'm just not sure if it's wired to the mains with battery backup or whether the wires just go to the door?
I have a blink doorbell so just want rid of this.

Ancient ? 40 years?Haha mum and dad had one of those. Just battery operated normally . If you take it off the wall you will see if there are any wires elsewhere. When you said ancient I was expecting a brass pulley thing with a rope attached!

I put ancient because a lot of posters might think wifi which wasn't invented in the 80s!
If it's just battery how does the bell on the door make the chimer ring unless they are wired together?

There is a length of bell-wire (that is it's name) which runs between the chime and the bell push.
No mains voltage involved.

Ah thank you, I can safely cut it off then. I haven't dared remove it because of the wires. (As you can tell I'm not good at DIY)

Bugger me, I feel really old now. We had a clockwork doorbell you had to wind up. No electricity, planet saving though.

We've still got one of those 😁

Oh I'm really envious. And off to Google....

FuzzyPuffling · 15/11/2025 17:15

Oh man, you can still get wind up doorbells! 😁

Don't worry I'm probably older than you. I put ancient because I thought people would assume wireless connection. In fact we've lived here since it was new so that thing is long overdue removal.

I’ve got one where you pull a brass rod and it rings the bell on the other side. I’m not sure if it was original to the house or put in afterwards though.

And didn't those clockwork buggers make a noise!
Never come across any electric (battery or mains) half as good!

Yes - ours is really loud. Can hear it in the back garden!
As long as someone has remembered to wind it up..... 😁
