Can anyone tell me about good places to live near Brighton?

We want to move to within 20-30 minutes of Brighton, and it seems there are a few areas where we might even be able to afford a bedroom or two more than elsewhere. I don't know the area very well and have no ideas about what it's like for kids. Do you live in the area and have info about schools/nice areas/etc?

I work in Uckfield (30 mins from Brighton) and we're planning to move there (renting) next month. All I can say about it really is that house prices are much cheaper than the surrounding areas...

I have a friend who lives in Rottingdean which is just along the coast (east) from Brighton. It's lovely there.

my friend is in danehill but it's a way away. i think rottingdean is nice but you will find prices cheaper back from the coast. a friend in norfolk lives 10 miles from the coast and has a lovely rural house at half the price of the seaside ones she looked at to start

rottingdean and steyning are lovely but not cheap

We live just outside eastbourne and have down after moving down from london 8 years ago - and we love it. Brighton's lovely to visit for the buzz, shops and eating out, but a big grungy in places and way to expensive.
Eastbourne is in our view the hidden jewel of the south coast. Property is much cheaper than brighton, schools are good, beachfront is not all slot machines and g -strings IYKWIM , town centre is due for a major upgrade in the next 3-5 years and we are right at the foot of the downs. By the way my house is up for sale and its cheap

haylo-come on then, how big and price?

4 bed, one ensuite, cloakroom, 3 reception rooms, good sized kitchen diner, utility, double detached garage and drive, hot tub in garden, eight years old, edge of small estate up private shared drive overlooks countryside .... approx 3 miles from beach and 5 miles from town centre. Turtle don't know what area you are currently in ? how does £300k sound

Although in honesty we are now trying to rent it out as the market is so slow and we would rather keep hold of it for a few years until the market recovers.

Now the one we want to buy....my dream house the other end of town, old victorian needs work, loads of space... loads of money required so we will be living on baked beans for a few years

turtle23 · 07/06/2008 20:33

Haylo...hmm..sounds like the kind of place we might look at, but in all honesty we will probably wait a bit for the same reason!! Your dream house sounds a lot like mine.
We are in London/Surrey and cannot wait to get out!!
