What is behind this section in bathroom?

I’m buying a house and wanting to renovate the bathroom next year. What would be behind this raised part of the wall? Pipes? Would like to remove to add more space if possible.

Could be. What is the room/space directly above and below? Could it be a chimney breast?

It's hard to tell from a photo, but possibly an internal soil stack/vent and it looks like there is a waste pipe flowing in that direction too from the sink, and perhaps bath if it is to the right. So they will be partially enclosed lower down.

The toilet waste will be behind the toilet, for a start. Possibly it'll be going through the wall to the outside (you'll see the waste pipe outside if that's the case).

It might be nothing. Could be the soil and vent pipe is boxed in the corner and they extended the boxing over so the loo tank has something to hang on. Couldn’t have the loo sticking out in front of a gap.

Will be concealed pipework.

Soil stack/vent and supply to WC. Depending on configuration, you may be able to tuck a wall hung cistern in there, but you won't know until you open it up.

It will almost certainly be your soil stack (tall but) & waste piles from bath/shower & toilet.

While you're doing the bathroom I'd look at changing it as the lack of symmetry would drive me batshit.

Without seeing more photos it's hard to say how, but preferably full width of the toilet and full height. Maybe with some recesses.

edit: looking again, msybe a bit less wide at the bottom & closer to the window at the top.
