Decorating prior to selling

Carpets knackered.

Walls all cream, not been painted for a long time. We have been here 8 years and it was a long term rental before us.

In depth clean and de-clutter required.

How much do you think we should spend on decorating neutrally before putting property on market?

It's a flat. 2 bed. Worth 160k and not much out there. Northern small town but a lot of air b n b potential as well as 1st time buyer/ down sizer residential or buy to let. Another one in same building snapped up this summer. Was on for 1 month max before being sold.

Ours looks tired but I am wondering about whether someone will just buy and rip up carpets etc anyway?

Tips welcome. No rush to move, just thinking about what to do within the next year.

I have just bought a two up two door in Yorkshire. It had been painted but badly. I will need to redecorate as moving has caused so many scuffs. I am also ripping the carpets out and glad I am once I have moved out as I have had so many tradespeople in and out it has taken its toll.

If the walls look dingy I’d paint them, but properly prepping them is key. You’d spend a few thousand getting it professionally done (you would around here anyway). Otherwise don’t bother but make sure it’s super clean.

We only did a huge clean up, and only painted the hallway., planters and flowers etc in front garden....first impressions !...sold in few hours and over asking price.

I’ve just sold. Fresh coat of paint where needed but left the old carpets as they were because I knew the next person would either want to replace in their style or switch to laminate and it seemed a waste to change myself. I priced very reasonably with that (and a few other bits) factored in. Just went with clean, decluttered and presentable. Good luck!
