Shit! Extractor fan installed in the bathroom ceiling - asbestos???

My 80s bungalow has popcorn ceilings throughout the whole house, including the bathroom. I have no clue if it has asbestos. I’m guessing it does, my surveyor said it might have, but I never got it tested since I didn’t think I’d be drilling into the ceilings anytime soon. However, a few days ago, I had an extractor fan put in the bathroom. I honestly don’t know why I didn’t think of it earlier. The electrician didn’t say anything about it. It’s been okay so far, but isn’t it dangerous if it’s been disturbed? What do I do now?? Get someone to check it? Who? I’m panicking!

You can buy asbestos kits online, take several samples and send them off to get checked. You can't do anything now but you'd at least know for future.

Also do I need to tell the electrician??

Maybe some of the neighbours know if there's asbestos in the ceilings?

Thank you, I'll definitely look into getting it tested. Is it unsafe for me to be using the fan now though? Or even to be in the bathroom at all? I only had the fan installed because the bathroom was getting damp and mouldy, but now I'm worried that I've created an even bigger problem?

The electrician should have queried it at the time if they felt it was a possibility. Asbestos was phased out in 1980s so it is not likely.

The electrician should know about asbestos as a domestic electrician. That risk is on him/her for not asking you before they drilled if it had been tested.
