Where would you look for somewhere nice but affordable(ish) to live within a reasonable commute?

DS has the opportunity for his dream lifestyle. He has some savings, I can help a bit, we're probably looking at not more than £250k.

Any ideas?

Kendal

Kendal's OK, but I'd look at Lancaster if he could stomach the commute. Much more pleasant town all round, and being outside the national park prices much better, bigger range of shops etc.

I live between kendal and lancaster, some lovely places round here and can be more reasonably priced (eg Bare on edge of Morecambe which has a train station).
