Building wardrobe over stairs…

Basically I want to know if what I’m imagining is possible. We have a staircase that goes straight up, central in the house with what I believe to be load bearing walls on both sides. There’s nothing above it and window at first floor height (impossible to reach and clean! Essentially I’d like to board across the bottom third of the staircase, and create a doorway from my son’s bedroom to give him a cupboard. This would mean making a doorway in a supporting wall and creating a floor where there isn’t one currently. Before I get a builder in for a quote and look like an idiot, do people think this can be done?

Yep, I have done it in a previous house

Thank you, that’s all I needed to know 😂 it’s such a waste of space currently and our rooms are not big. I’m planning on shuffling all the bedrooms walls round to add in an upstairs toilet 😀

It is possible, but cutting a doorway in the wall will be a lot more work than making it accessible from the landing,

Remember you need enough head height to get a bed up the stairs. Apart from that go for it. You might want to get a structural engineer to check that what the builder proposes will be strong enough.

Yes, only the bit above the downstairs hall will be ‘flat’, the bit over the stairs will slope so one bit of the wardrobe will have a slopy floor!

its not possible to access it from the landing unfortunately, we don’t really have a landing, just a square at the top of the stairs with doors off it. We’d have to jump!
