Have had brilliant white through the house for years now. The lounge, hallway & stairs need freshening up. We like the white but it just gets so grubby so quickly.

A couple of family members have Egyptian Cotton & Timeless in their houses which look nice but as I have recently tried testers in these, the Egyptian Cotton looks way too dark, which is surprising as our lounge is biggish & gets a lot of light in & the timeless looks quite yellow.

I’m afraid I’ve got in that rabbit hole of looking for the perfect ‘off-white’. I don’t want a grey toned white nor do I want it to look like magnolia!

I’m not looking at Farrow & Ball, it’ll be too expensive, DH will never agree! I’ve seen Johnstones do one called ‘Ivory Spray’ - anyone got this?

We just used Dulux Heritage Roman White and it's stunning. It has a pink base so doesn't look stark and cold like true white, or yellow like magnolia. It's beautiful and warm and bright.

katmunchkin · 14/10/2025 17:43

Nutmeg white is lovely!

seeyouyesterday · 14/10/2025 18:28

@ThatLilacTiger just googled Roman White, it does look lovely.
@katmunchkin and Nutmeg White too. I can see myself with 20+ testers!! and probably ending up with white at the end, DH is a stickler for change.

I have nutmeg white as the neutral in my living room against a bold feature wall, and it looks lovely

Ramblingaway · 14/10/2025 19:24

Avoid jasmine white, it's virtually indistinguishable from brilliant white.

FuzzyPuffling · 14/10/2025 19:32

Little Green "Linen Wash". Lovely paint and Lovely colour!

cannyvalley · 14/10/2025 23:11

We have timeless throughout our house. It doesn’t look yellow (but it does if you paint a patch over brilliant white , as it’s a contrast IYKWIM)

Paintbynos · 14/10/2025 23:17

Johnstones “commercial white” - it’s like the palest sepia/taupe. A very much lighter version of Egyptian cotton (which, like you, I really liked but found too dark).

SunnySideDeepDown · 15/10/2025 02:31

Sail White from Crown is a lovely off white.

Contraryjane · 15/10/2025 04:42

You can get Farrow and Ball colour matched in Dulux or Johnsons.

Sarahpainting · 15/10/2025 06:13

watching with interest. Just had my bedroom decorated in Johnstones white, only because I couldn’t decide, I really wanted a warm white with no cream. Our decorator won’t use anything except Johnstone’s and the testers are £6 each ! I need to choose something for our living room now.
Please let us know what you decide.

Brindlegirl · 15/10/2025 09:19

I have Johnstone's trade paint in Swansong. it's a soft white not brilliant white but definitely white rather than cream or ivory.

Advocodo · 15/10/2025 09:32

Just redecorated our whole house. Upstairs I used Dulux Just Walnut in all the bedrooms.minreallynlike it. It changes colours with the light. It’s lighter than Egyptian Cotton which I put downstairs in a big very light lounge and darker than aTimeless that I put in the hallway, stairs and landing. Hope you find your colour.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 15/10/2025 09:34

We have Egyptian cotton in our lounge, I want to change it as it is too dark.
timeless is also yellow in our light.
dulux almond white is perfect - a warm white with no yellow or mauve.

LibertyLily · 15/10/2025 14:46

We used Johnstone's Ivory Spray on a large ceiling at our last house (walls were Farrow and Ball Olive, an archive colour, quite dark). The room was originally two - one really bright end with a huge bank of floor-to-ceiling windows, one window-less end - and the Ivory Spray seemed a pale, off-white in the bright section but definitely more creamy in the darker part of the room.

I'm currently considering using it for the hall ceiling and two ground floor ceilings in our new - very old - house as it seems to pair well with the saturated, period colours from the more expensive brands which we're putting on the walls.

We also used Johnstone's China Clay in the kitchen at our last house - that's a lovely colour, but probably a bit too deep for what you're looking for @seeyouyesterday.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 15/10/2025 14:49

I have loft white by Little Greene throughout all my house (kitchen, all cellings and woodwork) and I love it.

I had it matched by Valspar.

Netcam · 15/10/2025 18:40

We have Agua from Lakeland paints in our living room and it's a fab pale neutral colour. It is great paint too, I've used it for decades, no VOCs and fantastic quality.

seeyouyesterday · 15/10/2025 21:49

Thanks for all the suggestions, I’ve ordered a few testers so they’ll be arriving over the next few days, hopefully there will be one I like, who’d of thought it would be this difficult to choose a ‘white/cream’ paint!! I’m still a bit annoyed that Egyptian Cotton doesn’t work in my house, it looks so good in other houses! I would never describe my house as ‘dark’ as it lets in lots of natural light.

Just to add to your list we used Dulux Heritage York White and looks lovely!

Advocodo · 16/10/2025 07:44

Please keep us updated with your colour paint samples and which colour you choose in the end.

seeyouyesterday · 16/10/2025 08:39

@Advocodo yes I will.

Just an update, I have got a few more samples, ok well 5 more paint samples! I got 4 crown ones in
Sail White
Antique Cream
Swan Feather
Snowfall
And Johnstones Ivory Spray. They’re all really nice colours. Sail White is the only one in the running though as the others are too dark according to DH eye roll.

However! I did keep the Dulux Timeless tester & after trying it on a bit of canvas paper to my surprise it didn’t look too far off from Sail White, weird. So I tried Timeless on the wall & it looks quite nice, nothing like the yellowy yellow I tried on normal paper. 🤷‍♀️

I do have some coat samples coming today so who knows! But so far, Crown Sail White - which is only very slightly different to Brilliant white & Dulux Timeless are my Favs at the moment.

ThatBusyPanda · 18/10/2025 09:37

We’ve got Timeless in our hallway which is lovely and we’ve got a Johnstones mixed Wimborne White in the lounge which is a F&B colour. Both lovely!

seeyouyesterday · 18/10/2025 09:38

@Sarahpainting Johnstones testers in the range £1.99

seeyouyesterday · 27/10/2025 19:12

Just an update - so after much deliberation & headaches we have settled on Crown’s Sail White, there’s absolutely no going back now the paint is on order! I’m confident I’ve chosen the right colour, I anticipate there will not be a huge difference, which is fine as I was after a subtle change anyway.
