Carpet price - too expensive?

I got a quote for one room size 270x380 and was quoted £550 with underlay or £450 without. The carpet itself is nothing special, standard looking grey pile!

This seems really expensive to me for one small double bedroom. What have you paid recently? I’m in the South East.

Carpet is expensive, way more than you expect. Does that include fitting, seems about normal if it does.

Surely you can work it out. For the room size you're probably getting 12m2 carpet/ underlay.

What's the cost of the carpet per square metre? From your quote I'm guessing it's £33m2 which is relatively expensive. You could pay less. I have carpet at less than £20m2 and it's fine.

Then the cost of underlay? Looking at your quote its about £8m2 and again you could pay less although personally I don't scrimp on the underlay.

Any threshold strips required? They're usually extra.

Then fitting is often charged separately. Usually cash on the day and depends on the room size but for a small room I paid £40. But I suppose it could be £100 given your location.

You're not being ripped off but you could get it cheaper.

Just paid £315 for a 15 x 15 foot room not including underlay

Does that include the fitting? If it makes you feel better I paid way, way more than that to have bedrooms carpeted recently - beautiful carpet though. Thing is, fitting costs the same no matter how expensive the carpet is, and costs more if the gripper rods etc need doing as well, so it might be that a lot of that cost is the fitter rather than the carpet

Just did an engineered wood floor for £800 all in but fitted it myself and it took a week at 2 hours a day.

Looks good though. The room was 15m2 so 50% bigger than yours.

And no dusty carpets with beetles and dubious stains in the future.

£550 seems expensive to me.
