How can I stop my south facing front door from fading?

Hi - I’m about to repaint my south facing front door as it has faded quite badly in the sun. It was painted using a johnston’s copy of railings though I’m not sure what type of paint as I don’t have the tin. I suspect it maybe wasn’t the right type of paint though.

Does anyone have any tips on what type of paint I should be using or if I need to give it a top coat of sealant?

many thanks ☺️

I don't think there's much you can do tbh... A decent brand of paint (I've no idea which - sorry) will give you a good few years. But I think you'll just have to accept that it'll probably need repainting once a decade.
I remember as a child, our south-facing garage door got painted a really fun shade of shiny bright red. A real tomato-red.
It looked decent enough for probably 10 years, and then started fading. My parents never got it re-done. When they moved out, 20 years after painting the garage, it had faded to a dull, matt, salmon-pink.

Definitely not red. You only have to look at older red cars to see how badly it fades.

If south facing, choose a light colour, and ideally gloss. Use a quality paint like Zinsser all coat , available from Brewers and others....

Definitely wasn’t planning on red!! I don’t mind giving it a refresh, but it definitely hasn’t been ten years since it was last done, which was why I was wondering if there was better paint.

I am considering whether a lighter colour would be better. It’s a red brick Edwardian house and it’s the outer door so not in a recessed porch. Any colour suggestions gratefully received!
