How much was your Renovation Insurance?

Just about to start a double storey extension and I've been looking into renovation insurance. The build is £130k so we've been advised to insure the existing house plus the building works. It's a 12 week build (hopefully!).

Cost of the insurance for the 3 month build is £525 (+£45 broker's fee).

Is this about right? or have we been had?!

£700 for 12 months with Protek

Thanks @Ilovemyshed Maybe I'll try to get a quote from them.

we were quoted £2000 - but I had a chat with our insurers and the person I spoke to got confused and told me I was insured for everything I needed. The insurance company of course had to stand by what I was offered to I didn’t had be to pay extra.

Have you checked the builder's insurance and what it covers?

BravoBuild · 14/10/2025 06:36

Apologies for abandoning this thread! Quick update, we went with the quote as other insurers were asking for JTC (joint tenant contracts) between us and the builder.

@Doingmybest12the builder's insurance covers his materials onsite, PLI etc. but it was our existing house we were worried about. For example, a rear door was being boarded across temporarily during the build and how would that affect our normal insurance? Very complicated for a non-insurance, non-builder brain like mind to grasp 🫣 so we just paid out and hoped for the best. We're a few weeks in and all good so fingers crossed.

Oh, and when I rang our existing insurer and told them the building plans (standard two storey rear extension) they said they couldn't cover us and would cancel the insurance the day before the build started!

I think you mean JCT contract. You don’t have a contract with your builder?
