Cat scratching carpets

Hi any advise? I’m currently living in a house we are renovating with scraps of carpets here and there whilst we do this . However our rescue cat is scratching the carpets ( not much to be fair) and I really want carpets , he has a scratch post . Any ideas on how to stop this ??

Have you got those cardboard scratch blocks down? To be fair, our two still have the occasional go at the carpet regardless but if you put a bit of catnip on one of those he’ll likely prioritise scratching there. Is he an indoor puss?

Our late DBoycat was a bit of a carpet scratcher but oddly enough he stopped with we had new carpets. I've heard good things about those cat scratcher chairs and I'm thinking of getting some when we get a new sofa as DearGirlCat2 constantly scratches it.

Our cat used to do that and refused a scratching post so I bought one of those coir mats. LOVED IT! Even as he aged he still scratched on it several times a day. It was cheap and lasted years.

Cats can scratch more when anxious. Have you moved house recently?

our cat likes carpet too- we have number of carpet samples around and she mostly uses these. (Unless she is trying something I get through a closed door…) Got them for free/ very cheap from a carpet shop.
She’s also got a cardboard cat scratcher but she prefers to sleep in that!

Consider cut pile carpets. We have cut pile rugs downstairs and the cat isn’t interested. Loop pile, as we have in the bedrooms, is irresistible to their little claws, which is one of many reasons the cat is barred from the bedrooms…

I have this problem and haven't found an answer sadly.

We had a loop pile carpet - no trouble from cats. Then we got a new one and they have trashed it in places. Too expensive to replace so we just have to put up with it. Cats have since died so we now have the carpet as a reminder!
