Moving to Altrincham

My partner and I plan to move to Manchester from Wimbledon, London to be closer to family as we look to settle down.

Having done some research on areas, including many visits, and house prices we have decided to buy in the Altrincham, Hale, Hale Barns, Bowden area. We like Alderley Edge too but prefer the public transport connections of Altrincham (or nearby).

Does anybody have any advice, tips or things we should be aware of before we commit to buying a property in this area?

Thank you!

I live in Altrincham and love it (as you see from the attached map, typing this sat in Sainsbury’s car park!)

The nicest / leafiest areas are attached. Basically the areas around Groby Road / Bentinck Road, near the Devisdale / bowdon or around Hale village. South of Hale Road is more desirable than north of Hale Road.

All the schools are amazing, but the ‘best’ are St Vincent’s or Bowden CofE.

If you’re not religious (or not persuaded to attend church’s for school reasons..) the Bollin is generally regarded as a bit better than Stamford Park.

Other areas like the area around Stamford park are popular, but small houses and parking is a nightmare.

Further out you have Timperley and Stamford Brook where you get more for your money but not as ‘posh’.

Hale barns is well regarded and has nice large family houses, but you’d need to drive a lot, it’s very suburban.

Tbh though there’s no real areas to avoid, I love it here and where you end up will depend on budget and just what comes on the market.
