Internal doors replacement/ideas

Hello all

I started the process of buying a house in March but it's taken forever to go through and I'll admit to having a bit of buyers remorse now, because there have been better places come on the market for the same price, but they're flying off the market, so I'm sticking with what I've got.

Unfortunately, this means that I'm picking holes in the place I'm buying, however not serious enough for me to pull out. I hate the internal doors now and wonder what you would do with the attached? I would like to replace them. I was thinking of just changing the door handles, but have decided that's not enough and that it looks like a residential home upstairs. The carpet is going, obv. I'm thinking of stripping the banister spindles and rail and I'm going to do something to the stairs; but that's beside the point - the doors! oohhh, what can I do??

I have also included the second bedroom for views on that and what to do 😁

Are the doors original to the house

Agree re the handles. I hate lever handles on domestic building's and would go for knobs 😁

Id strip the post and rail on the stairs and have a stair run

These things are all very personal though
Theres no right and wrong tbh although anyone who strips out original features 😳 should be put in the stocks imo ☺️

Definitely not. They make me think of an HMO, tbh.

I was thinking of stripping the stairs and putting these decals on the risers.

I've not been able to post much because of bloody work 🙄😫

I would change the handles and the light switch and paint the doors. I like the photo below but I found lots of others where they'd been painted in stronger colours or if you're feeling brave one door was in one colour and another in a contrasting colour.

Only do the stairs if you have loads of time as I found it took forever and gave up.

I'm in the process of changing my doors which I loathe (far worse than those although similar handles). It's taken me 20 years, partly inertia and partly being slow to find handles I like.

It's surprisingly expensive. £110 per door, £40 per handle, then fitting... which can vary a lot! It adds up quickly. And takes awhile to do.

I've had four doors done downstairs. And I've still got the wretched things to paint <sigh> And the five doors to do upstairs...

Something I would think about with doors is what you plan on doing in the future. Our house had missing doors because the previous owner was in a wheelchair and they'd removed a lot of them, so it was a priority for us for privacy, and keeping warm. It's now a bit annoying because we're replacing carpets, fitting better underlay and the doors need tweaking but you can't make them longer. So if the doors are good enough I'd consider living with them for a bit until you know what your plans are.

Is it a Victorian house? In which case some nice solid wood panelled doors are “correct” and you could go natural wood, white or dark like a black/ charcoal.

It needs colour on the walls too and a neutral carpet.

I would strip the handrail and newels but leave spindles painted.

I think the doors are fine but would be nicer with new doorknobs.
The second bedroom doesn't look good with a double bed in that position. It would look better a foot or so away from the window and it would be easier to draw the curtains. Better still would be a sofa bed under the window. A slim wardrobe and chest of drawers to provide some storage.
