Wooden floor advise

Hello we are about to try wooden floors for the first time and would appreciate your advice . We have moved into a house with good condition floor boards but they need a clean and sand . They also have gaps ? Any advise on cleaning/sanding and varnish/sealing products ??

I have sanded more floor than I care to remember so yes I can advise.
First of are you sure the boards are definitely of good enough quality? Things to look for, small gaps ok, big gaps bad! If you sand it with the right machinery, it will take 2,3,4 mm off the surface have you got that spare before sanding down to the tongue? Then there’s the nails to consider, if they are showing they will need punching below the surface have you got the thickness to do this?

These machines have a lever that raises the sanding drum independently of the wheel, this is critical to achieve a good finish, ‘standard’ hire machines do not have this feature and will put scoops in the floor ever time you change direction.

You will also need an edging sander
Other than that, go to Utube to watch plenty of vids on how to do it, and prepare for a weekend or two of hard work, if you need anything other advice let me know, happy to help.
