Buildings insurance and unoccupied

Getting first buildings insurance today. The house will have a rewire before we move in, I imagine it might be 6 weeks before we move. The policy doc says that there isn't cover for vandalism or theft, water or oil escape, while the house is unoccupied. Is this because it's over 30 days? This seems nuts.

This is with direct line, so not a crap company.

The specifics for terms on it being unoccupied will be in the policy docs… no one here can advise on your particular policy.

You can get short term unoccupied policy cover through various brokers if needs be … Alan Boswell is one.

Have read again and it seems to be only if unoccupied for over 60 days but will call them tomorrow to be sure before taking out the policy. I'm expecting to move in within 4-6 weeks of completion so that should be fine.

Make sure they also know you are doing renovations. Do you have a plaster and decorator lined up too? Rewiring is a messy job.
