plasterboard tape - how to use?

Hello

I am not very experienced DIYer so this may be a silly question.

I am intending to use self adhesive plasterboard tape to cover some hairline craks and some joints on the ceiling.

What I am not clear is whether I can just simply paint over the tape or do I need to cover the tape with joint compound before painting.

Would appreciate some comments and also any recommendations for self adhesive plasterboard tape

It would be best to cover the tape with drywall compound, then sand. You might need two coats. There are any number of how-to videos on Youtube.

Hi @user148984678942 Im just doing hairline cracks myself now.
I don’t use tape I use Toupret fill n flex
It’s similar to a caulk only this has fibreglass threads running through it so allows flexibility to prevent cracking again.
Hopefully added a few photos of what I use.

I widen the crack with a blade and small screwdriver.
Enough to make an dented channel.Brush all the loose plaster away.
Then use toupret flex into the channelled groove.
Go slowly and don’t overfill.Keep smearing the flex into the crack.I use my red silicone thing in photo dipped in water to clear off excess.
I try to clean all the flex off the ceiling as much as possible as it’s difficult to sand down when dry.

Leave for 24 - 48 hrs to dry
.
It will shrink back but thats ok.So long as you can see the crack is completely sealed
With the toupret.
Sand all the area when completely dry and then fill with skim or a light filler. Sand and smooth again and keep going until the crack is completely filled and seamless.
One photo is just the toupret drying and the other photo is a different crack skimmed over ready for painting.

Hope that helps.
