Lived in a rented property for almost 2 years, was not well decorated when we move in (dark grey with patches in the wrong colour etc) so have been discussing with the letting agent us repainting. They said this was fine so long as we take a photo of what we are changing beforehand. I sent a message about a wall in a bedroom which was plaster beige coloured with marks on-not ideal. Changing the paint to green which i thought was fairly neutral, and cracked straight on as had some time spare. Later got a message saying it would have to be approved by the landlord, but I'd already started 😭 simple misunderstanding on my part i guess as I thought we'd been given the go ahead previously so long as we give a heads up. Now stressing. Have told them I started before their message, apologised and said we would repaint when moving out if they require it.

Can we be evicted for this? Never missed rent or bills and only ever asked for repairs, try not to bother them too much, but really bricking it now given the renting market and that we couldn't afford to move. Genuinely nervous.

Just paint over it if they have an issue. Not worth stressing about.

Do you think they would make us change it immediately or just when moving out?

Just paint over it if the landlord objects to the colour - you jumped the gun a bit but it's not a reason to evict you. If anything it shows that you are taking care of the place. I am redecorating my lounge and dining area in August - Landlord is very happy, he's choosing the paint and paying for it and then taking a bit off my rent for the labour - always pays to wait and make sure they are in agreement - they might have even forked out for the materials if you had!

Green isn’t very neutral unless it is very pale.

But if they don’t like it, you just paint over with a colour that they are happy with. No big deal.

I did jump the gun, youre right, I thought that prior conversations still applied but I should've just waited. Think they've shut for the day now so won't get a response until monday

No, you can not be evicted for redecorating, even if it is some horrendous shade of bright red! All the landlord can ask you to do it return it to the original condition when you leave - the condition being the one reported on your inventory. Please dont stress anymore about this.
