Fridge/freezer problem

Haven’t used it for a few months. Turned it on and the fridge is not cooling although the freezer is.
Its making a humming noise and it sounds like there’s water running
Does this sound like new fridge territory?

How long has it been on for? Give it 48 hours if you can and see if it cools down

Ok, let’s hope it sorts itself out in a day or so!

Did you move it just before turning it on? My understanding is you are meant to allow a fridge to stand upright for at least 4 hours before plugging it in. If you don’t, the compressor oil can run out of the compressor and it can damage the fridge.

If you just plugged it in and it’s not been moved, I’d agree that you should leave it for 24 hours and see if it cools down. Otherwise, it may be new fridge time.

Not following @CandidHedgehog - the fridge has always been in the same place and upright position. It’s just been turned off since March.

Then that obviously doesn’t apply. How is it doing after running for a few hours? Is it cooling now?

fridge pump has become stuck due to not having run for a few months.
give the fridge pump a clomp with a hammer to see if it will jar free
if not, buy new appliance

Maggiethecat · 26/07/2025 14:25

Where is the fridge pump
typically?

ignore my comment, apparently one cannot delete a comment after posting it
as you can hear humming then it appears the pump is operational

Ive been pummelling away at the fridge 😂
There’s coolant (?) or other liquid loudly flowing and the hum is quite loud but alas the fridge is still warm and the freezer cool.
Need to decide whether to call the repair man or just buy a new one (don’t live at the flat but want to use it soon so a working fridge would be good!)
