Bath Overflow Cover

The overflow cover for my bath came off ages ago. I couldn’t see a way to reattach it and didn’t think it was a big deal, and put it somewhere “safe”.

Just came across it again.

Can anyone tell me how to reattach? Is it broken? I can’t feel anything in the hole to attach it to? Photos attached.

And does this mean I have been really stupid and there’s likely an issue, or water getting somewhere that it shouldn’t?

Thanks.

If you stick your finger through the overflow hole, is there a pipe or just the unfinished side of the bathtub?
If the pipe is there (and I can't make it out on the photo) then not so bad and you just need to reattach the cover.
If on the other hand there is nothing there you need to get it sorted ASAP as it means that in the event of an overflow, water will run straight onto the floor under the bath, get under the floorboards and damage the plaster on the ceiling below (as well as danger due to wet electrics etc). If the overflow pipe is off and hanging low, water could be coming out of it from where it connects to the main bath plug connection.*
Remove the bath panel for access and/or a better look.

*Please excuse incorrect names or terminology, I am not a plumber but just putting down what my OH is saying (who is also not a plumber).😁

Thanks so much for replying.

I can’t feel a thing in the overflow hole.

It’s been like that for sooooo long, and I live in a flat. I didn’t think it was much of an issue as we never use the bath, just the shower, but what you’ve said about the main plug is freaking me out now.

I don’t think I can remove my bath panel. It’s tiled in the same tile as my walls Blush
