Considering a move to South Wales…

Thinking about moving here to be closer to family. Was considering to the South or East of Bristol, but realising that you can get a lot more for your money in Wales. I’d appreciate some opinions and where to consider/where to avoid. Thanks.

Totally depends on your budget and what your needs are. There’s no point giving you expensive parts of Cardiff if you don’t have the budget for it, you’ll get better answers with more information.

On another note I work with a few people who’ve moved over the bridge from Bristol because prices are so high there. They were shocked at what they could get around here and openly admit they’d never get a flat in a decent area of Bristol for the same amount of money.

Budget around £250k, 3 bedrooms and a garden.

My parents moved to south west wales about 15 years ago and they love it there. A real community feel with a shop, dentist, doctor and pub in the village. The locals have been really welcoming and they are enjoying their retirement.

As a retired couple it’s great, but for youngsters there’s not much there and many move away for jobs when they get older

When I said S/E Bristol, I meant 30/40 miles outside, not actually in Bristol.

For that budget I’d say you’d get a decent house in any of the valleys. For commuting Pontypridd, Treforest and surrounding areas are handy because it’s straight on the motorway and you have the trains if you don’t drive. I don’t think you’d get much in Cardiff for your budget, you’d probably be looking at flats for £250k. Aberdare area has some nice areas, this is a bit Mrs Hinch for my liking but if you can see past the decor it’s a decent house.

Thanks - we’re in our 60s so retirement looms!

You’d definitely get more for your money in the Valleys. I live in Dinas Powys (large village outside Cardiff), in a 3 bed terrace and there are houses around that fit your budget, but they’d likely need a little bit doing (not a full refurb, just updating).

I love DP. 5mins walk from the woods, 5 mins drive into Penarth, 12mins on the train to Cardiff and 15 mins in the car to Barry and the Knap. And a lovely village feel with 3 pubs!
