How are you using ChatGPT?

I’ve tried to use a few times for ideas on decor/ layout but find that it will randomly add windows and doors where there are none (or remove them), make hallways wider etc.

Other people seem to use it really successfully for redesigning spaces but even know I’m normally very good with writing prompts I don’t seem to have the knack!

I'd ask it to write you the prompt. I did and this is whst it came up with:

📝 Here’s an upgraded version of your prompt including fireplace and windows:

> I'm redesigning my lounge and want design ideas that are accurate and well-matched to my space. The room is [insert dimensions], faces [e.g. south], and has [describe the number, size, and placement of windows — e.g. one large window on the long wall opposite the door]. There’s a [describe fireplace — e.g. central chimney breast with electric/log burner fireplace on the short wall]. The flooring is mid oak, and I want a cool, calm, warm and welcoming feel. I'm working with a colour palette that includes [e.g. Bottlegreen and Cream], and I’m considering [e.g. a feature wall]. I'd love suggestions for furniture layout, lighting, colours, textures, and soft furnishings that complement the floor and colour palette. I prefer a [e.g. modern/cosy eclectic] style and will use the space mainly for [e.g. relaxing, watching TV, reading]. Please take into account the natural light and fireplace when advising on layout and finishes. Avoid [e.g. grey tones or overly cluttered styles].

Ive used it to write a speech I'm giving at a conference

I used it to plan a garden and didn't like the ideas it gave me, everything was either out of the budget or just not that realistic. It recommended me a solid landscape planning tool called Gardenbox 3D though, so can't really say it was useless.

ChatGPT can be really useful but can’t really do a proper full blown room layout and decor. You might be more successful a
using prompts that source inspiration and asking specific questions like what shade of white does not look yellow given the light in your room or how to decorate a bookshelf.
