New build - retaining wall in garden

Hoping someone can help please.

We are interested in a new build plot which is still at the build stage. We have been told it will have a 6ft retaining wall at the back of the garden with a 6ft fence on top.

The garden is small, 30ft length, 25 width and an odd shape. Garden is on a slope towards the house of 30-40cm across the garden.
The garden is S/W facing will have one row of houses up behind it and fields to one side and front.
My concerns are that the garden will feel penned in with that height, a bit like a prison yard. Also is the slope too much and finally water coming towards the house in heavy rain!
Anyone have this and a picture of what that height wall/fence will actually look like.
Thank you

I can’t comment on how that will look but it will be a hard no from me with regards to the garden that slopes towards the house. We recently viewed a house that had a similar issue but it was the front garden rather than the back garden. The house absolutely reeked of mould and damp. It was all nicely done inside and beautifully decorated but the water must have done some damage as the smell was very noticeable despite the fact there was no visible issue inside. My brother is a builder and advised us to avoid houses like this even if they have drainage.

A 6ft wall with a 6ft fence on top is a lot without the slope towards the house. I'd keep looking OP.

I think it would make me feel penned in too.

There was an episode of your garden made perfect where a garden like this got a makeover. It was quite impressive.

It's still on iplayer- s2 ep2.

We had a six foot retaining wall at the end of our garden. It had normal fences on top (not six foot), but a pretty huge tree. The garden also sloped towards us.

honestly I never felt penned in. Our garden wasn’t big at all but it never felt like the wall was looming over us. It helped that our house had three floors so it was taller than the wall and we had a clear view out of our top windows.

with regards to the sloping; we never had any issues with damp or mould and our house was in a former dyke.

having said that one of the early projects for us was levelling out the garden - we moved so much earth around so it was two levels. Then it looked great!

although, if it is sloped and you try to level it, be prepared to find all kinds of builders crap in the earth. We found a bunch of tools and an iron! And we found that part of the wall under the earth wasn’t constructed in the same material so we had to redesign some planters to cover that…

all of this to say, it’s not all bad! And you can make it work if you like the house!
