Carpets - how much!!!

Two rooms, 5.6m x 4m and the other 4.6 x 3.7m. 100% manmade carpets, they are kids rooms and there is moth damage to their woolen ones.

We have not bought much for the house for about 10 years a we did a big fit out then.

But the prices are insane, basically over 2k for these two rooms alone! Live in the south east, does this sound normal? One room is a bit oddly shaped, but this seems a lot to me....

That sounds a lot. Worth going to Tapi carpets online or in store (basically carpet right) and looking there. You can get expensive carpets but also something more basic. Can’t imagine you’d be spending more than £500 including labor and underlay.

avoid independent stores that charge a fortune

Thank you, ive got Tapi carpets coming now. One quote was nearly £3k. I do use independent people normally, but it looks like I can no longer do this, which is a shame.

What's the breakdown of the quotes you've received?

Presumably they include fitting, gripper rods, door plates, underlay? You've got 44 square metres of room there. You need to know how much the carpet alone is costing to see whether you can get something cheaper you like which is suitable.

Smaller companies don't have the same economies of scale or buying power, which tends to make them dearer.

I paid £1k for one bedroom so £2k sounds about right. Costs have gone up since brexit. Depends on quality of carpet you are getting, kind of underlay etc.

I had four double bedrooms, stairs and landing carpeted, plus vinyl flooring in two smallish bathrooms, and it was around 3.5k.

Had to pay the fitters direct on the day and that was about £500.

That was just under two years ago with Carpetright/Tapi as they are now.

I need to replace my stair carpet which I'm not looking forward to.

If one of the rooms is oddly shaped will you get a lot of wastage? Might there be enough to have an oft whip bound and make a rug out of it?

We paid £640 for a 6m x 3.5m lounge last year from Carpetright included underlay and door bars but not gripper rods. You can also buy roll ends cheaply.
