Next doors building works and mice

I live in a flat in converted semi-detached house. The house next door, also converted into flats, is owned by an unscrupulous landlord who turned it into a building site last year to squeeze more flats in and more money out. It's been a state for over a year now, rubbish in front of the house, broken windows and roof, pigeons nesting in the roof, garden completely overgrown. Work stopped while he applied for permission for further renovations. He's moved tenants in to one of the flats although it all looks unfinished. We've since had a terrible mouse infestation in our flat- I think they must have been disturbed when tenants moved in. Doing everything we can in terms of blocking holes, keeping food away and cleaning etc, they've started gnawing at the furniture. Poison not working. Tried speaking to the landlord next door about blocking up any entryways on their side, said he would look into it but ignoring me now. I've got no idea whether there's anything he can be forced to do through any routes, either taking action on the mice or generally improving his house which is just miserable to be next door to. If there is anything we have grounds to contact the council about and whether this is a good idea. Any suggestions?

Contact the council pest control?

I'd just have a polite chat with environmental health at the council first, see what they have to say & advise. I had a similar scenario with l/l extending and converting a property but luckily the mice problem abated after blocking up any possible entry points with fine mesh plates, using a very effective poison (I'll try to find the brand for you) and a really fierce hunting cat moving into the area. Traps were useless.

Thanks so much. Going to try this poison and will have a chat with the council and see what they say.

I didn't want to use poison at first but changed my mind about that pretty quickly!

Yes same until faced with things like plagues of rats, mice, bedbugs, slugs etc. Good luck and come back & let us know how you got on. Is your flat ground or first floor btw?
