Moving up the property ladder - what size are the jumps?

Bit of a weird question I know, but where you live, what are the jumps between flats, 2 bed terraces, 3 bed semis etc.

I am wondering how big the leap is when you move up the ladder. It seems to me that the next leap we have to make is about £150K - which seems very high to me?

Any views?

Round my way it's about another £150k to move from three beds to four. Impossible.

Round here, 1-bed flat approx £100-120,000,

2-bed flat anything from £120-150,000

2-bed terraced house 135-150,000

3-bed terraced anything from £145-150,000 to about £200,000 depending on size and location

3-bed semi from £160,000 (not so 'nice' bit of town) to about £230,000, with lots in the £180-200,000 bracket.

3-bed detached from about £190,000 upwards

4-bed houses from about £225,000 and upwards, with most 4-bed detacheds costing £235,000 or more.

So a fair amount of scope for moving to bigger homes without too huge a gap.

£250k to go from two bed flat to three bed house. NO chance

MegBusset · 24/05/2008 10:42

Here it's around £100k for each extra bedroom

What part of the country are you in, eco? Only I like the sound of those prices!

ecoworrier · 24/05/2008 18:26

South-west. And I think I like them too reading what the rest of you are saying!

LaDiDaDi · 24/05/2008 18:29

We went from 2 bed flat at £135k to 4 bed semi at £222K. Could have had a 3 bed detatched for similar price or a small 4 bed detached for £250k upwards.

I want to live where ecowarrier and LaDiDaDi do [envy}

It is very frustrating knowing that you could get a lot more for your money elsewhere .

Saw a house in a street I liked today. Terraced. 3 bed. £600k. Boooooooo!

It depends really, we could probably get 4 beds for 180k? There are not many 4 bed houses round here though, and we don't live in an amazing area and so a bigger house would be in a better area which obviously increases the price a fair bit!

nervousal · 26/05/2008 12:22

we went from one bed flat to 3 bed semi (in about 2002) 21k - 86k and from 3 bed semi to 4 bed detached (168k - 225k) this year
