Replacing kitchen worktops

We’d like to have our kitchen work surfaces replaced as they’re old and black and make the kitchen look very dark. It’s a fair sized kitchen, with quite a few worktops plus an island in the middle. We’ve just had our first quote for removing them and replacing them and it was £6,300!! Is this not crazy? I’ll get some other quotes and I’ll also look into the overlay ones. If anyone has had the overlays, please tell me what you think of them!

What are you hoping to replace them with? We replaced our laminate with quartz a couple of weeks ago. Including a splashback, upstands and a built under sink, the cost was £2995. We don’t have an island, but two quite long runs at right angles.

I had quartz overlays - they are beautiful and two years on still look lovely. I would highly recommend, they really lightened up my kitchen.

sorry should have said - yes, quartz. I was expecting £3-4k but not £6,300!

My parents have granite overlays in their utility and much prefer them to the actual granite they have in their kitchen. I think they used granite transformations.

Us too. We had ours done about 4 months ago. Just under £2k for 4.7 m length in a L shape, with a new sink too. This included disconnecting and reconnecting the gas hob and electric oven. The work was all done in a day.

And are you happy with them?

Yes on balance, the transformation was amazing and the fitting was very quick and efficient. We had cupboard doors and drawer fronts done at the same time, and it took a day and a half to fit. We changed our sink at the same time and the fitters plumbed in the new sink too. Friendly team.

i went with a dark blue Matt finish door front and it shows every thumb print, if I could do over I would go for a shinier finish, much easier to clean.

Thank you!
