Hello, bought our first house a month ago, last week or so there’s been an on and off buzzing / whining today it’s been happening for the last few hours and it’s doing my head in!!

Would appreciate any advice:

-Seems to be coming from the stopcock which feels like it’s vibrating. Noise is also loud near the boiler which is the floor above and directly above stopcock

-have been told by the fitter that installed an appliance that we have high water pressure of 8 bar but that up to 10 bar is fine.

-noise seems to start when we haven’t used water for a while I.e. in the morning, today we’ve been out all day

-the property was empty for at least a year before we moved in and the water was turned off

-have tried turning off the water, turning off the boiler and turning both off (I mean that works for computers right 😂) and also letting the water run and flushing the toilet a few times in a row. Hasn’t made any difference.

Any ideas to stop me going mad?! No landlord now so it’s my problem!!

thanks

What does the pressure gauge on your boiler say? Could your radiators have air in?

3mma35 · 18/06/2025 20:22

It’s just below the 1 bar mark on the boiler.
we haven’t used the radiators yet so I guess they could 🤷🏻‍♀️ it’s been warm so I haven’t looked into how to put the heating on yet 🫣

Can anyone else hear it?

I'm asking because I moved house and could suddenly hear a buzzing sound coming from a wall behind my bed. I never got to the bottom of it and moved about a year later.

It was tinnitus!

Rainbowshine · 18/06/2025 20:31

Probably air in the heating system or hot water pipes. You can easily bleed the radiators to sort them out.

3mma35 · 18/06/2025 20:40

Yes DH can hear it too, it’s just not annoying him as much!

thank you, I’ll go YouTube how to bleed radiators whilst slightly regretting throwing out the rather worn homehandyman book DM kindly gave me!

it has stopped now but sure it will start again!

Also, investigate whether your boiler has a setting that intermittently turns itself on to maintain the temp of water to your hot taps. That was the cause of my random pipe noises. I turned of that function, which means I need to run the taps for a little longer when I want hot water, but it beats being driven mad!

3mma35 · 18/06/2025 20:50

Oh yes @LessWeightKate it does have that setting. Never lived anywhere with a combi boiler before so it’s been exciting having it on.

When I had a noise like that it was the outside tap that wasn't turned off.

Try two things.

Find the main stopcock (preferably the outdoor one) and turn it off.
Does the noise stop? And start again immediately you turn on?

Find the Main Switch on your Consumer Unit (before 1965 it was called a fusebox) and turn it off.

Following with interest as I am having the same problem.

Not been able to find an outdoor stopcock. We spoke to the water company as couldn’t find the metre but it turns out that was because we don’t have one.
have tried turning the indoor one off and didn’t make any difference.

Can’t get to the fuse box atm as DC are up
and down. Will ask DH to do so when he is home and to find the boiler manual- sorry to keep you in suspense and thank you all so far!
