New build house smells

We moved into a new build property just over a year ago, it wasn't new to us. The previous owners had been in there around 18 months - it's was a second home, think they sold due to tax.

Anyway, it really smells. It's a synthetic smell but other than that I can't describe it, not sickly/sweet,sulphury, etc. Just synthetic and not nice!!!

It was always worse in the entrance hall and I thought this was due to the synthetic matting and vinyl floor they had chosen.

We've been away for 3 weeks on an extended holiday and having been having a few alterations done in that time. Including replacing that flooring with wooden boards. Got back yesterday and and the smell is worse than ever and it's everywhere it's horrid.

How can it be getting worse and how can it be now in every room!!

Has anyone else experienced this, what can we do to get rid of it. It's 2.5 years old surely anything to do with the newness should be getting better not worse!

Was the house empty when you were away? I would think maybe the smell seems worse after being shut up with no fresh air or movement in it for 3 weeks. Also, you're noticing it more because you've been away from it for that long.
I notice something very similar to what you describe when we go into the front room after the door has been shut all day. Our house is 8 years old but I think in our case it's from the new sofas and flooring.
