Cost of painter / decorator - just for fun

A friend of mine has recently built a house. They have just had the whole thing painted and I was surprised by the cost.

South East.
All Farrow & Ball.
Large 5 bedroom house.
Downstairs has a kitchen, utility, cloakroom and 3 reception rooms.
Upstairs has 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
Also stairways and halls.

How much would you expect to pay to go from bare plaster to finished?

20k

I’m amazed they could get someone to turn up.

(not jealous)

FiendsandFairies · 01/06/2025 09:40

I say £50K.

32k

A king’s ransom.

I ended up painting my entire house myself after being quoted 10K for one room...

AhBiscuits · 01/06/2025 09:58

I'm obviously way out of touch, because the cost was 30k and honestly my jaw hit the ground 😄

We were quoted £10,000 for a small two bedroom house from bare plaster to full decoration, so I wouldn’t surprised at more than double for a big house. It’s a big job - the plaster has to be primed, then two coats of paint including all cutting in, stairs and landings can take ages, skirting and doorframes etc.

I just had to pay £4k to redecorate a small (under 600sqft) flat. I’m not surprised at all it’s £30k.

Fuck off. My guy does painting and wallpapering of our large lounge for £700, and I’m in London. Your mate has been had!

£15k

Edited - to say I read the actual cost and nearly spat my tea out!! OMG this should have had a trigger warning!

Good grief. I thought painter decorators were one of the cheaper trades and could be got for around £300 a day. I’m in Outer London and just got a great bloke to paint for two days for £500 (excluding paint). He was recommended by neighbours and that was his quote so I didn’t go looking for a cheap quote. Another local friend has a retired bloke who does an excellent job for £100/day. It’s a popular side hustle for people looking for cash in hand.

Even at £300/day that’s 100 days of labour! Even with other costs it shouldn’t be that high surely.

We recently paid 15k to have a 4 bed redecorated. Empty and all the same colour. I’d imagine it more for bare plaster.

Friend of mine was quoted £10,000 in 2004 so I’m gonna go for 20
