am having a nightmare - we have infestation of carpet beetles, rentokil think they are coming from a chimney breast in my bedroom which is bricked up and just has a small grate to let air in... apparently the beetles come from birds nests, and there is a lot of rustling and cooing coming from the chimney.

rentokil say all they can do is get rid of the existing beetles.

we can get a roofer to cap the chimneys at the top so no more birds get in.

but meanwhile, what happens to the pigeons & nest that are in situ in the chimney breast??? presume they die there and then we get a plague of flies and smell???

does this mean we have to get builders to cut into the chimney breast and scoop out all the birds?

if anyone had this situation please advise as i don't know where to start!

You could get a chimney sweep in to push the nest out first, their brushes should fit through the grate once it is removed. Then cap the chimney and call in Rentokil. I doubt whether the smell would be too bad if you just left them there but the pitiful squawking as they find out they are unable to get out might be annoying.

Pidgeon poo has to be cleaned by specialists (we used to get them in our toilets at work when some plonk left the window open and the pidgeons would get it and crap all over the place)

I wouldn't want dead animals rotting in a chimney breast.

Agree with lalalonglegs to talk to a chimney sweep, you can't be the only person with a blocked up chimney and nesting birds.
