Moving companies

Hi all, can someone please explain to me like I’m a fool, how booking a moving company works?

I mean in the situation where you don’t have a completion date yet and won’t get one until last minute?

We asked 3 or 4 to come over and give us a quote.

They go around the house explaining how they will pack up and what vans they will use. We picked the company who said sensible things like "your road is quite narrow so we'll bring 2 small vans instead of one big one"

Many will offer to do the whole move including packing or just collect stuff after you've packed. Tell you if they provide the packing materials etc.

We definitely got a sense of who was best after talking to them and we didn't go with the cheapest quote.

  • Get a few removal companies to come out and give quotes.
  • Before you agree an exchange date with the rest of the chain, run it by your preferred removal firm to see if they are free.
  • Have a couple of backup options in mind in case your preferred one isn’t available.

You can usually get a quote and pencil in a tentative date with them. Just let them know upfront that your completion date isn’t set yet. Some will let you change the date later (as long as they’re available), but it’s best to keep them in the loop so they can stay flexible.

Thank you all, that makes sense!

We moved a few years back, we got quotes from a few firms, they were very similar in price. Our first choice, would not reserve a date until we exchanged, once we exchanged that was my first call, the date was available so I booked it.
