Removals cost - this is a bit high isn't it?

This quote is a lot isn't it?

Moving from small 3 bed terrace to a larger house 13 miles away

Without packing service £2220
With Packing service £3830

Includes VAT and insurance

I was expecting something around the £1200-£1500 mark!

Seems very steep

Whynotaxthisyear · 22/04/2025 14:03

Sounds a lot. We paid that in 2013 to move 300 miles away.

TokyoSushi · 22/04/2025 14:04

Yes that's really high, admittedly 5 years ago, but without packing we paid £750, get some more quotes.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 22/04/2025 14:04

Yes pricey. We paid just under £2k for short notice move from 3b to 5b and 150mi distance. November 24.

Blanketenvy · 22/04/2025 14:13

Definitely seems steep. I've just moved 2 bed semi to similar. 10 miles away for 650, but I used a small local firm, 2 men 1 van, but worked out fine. Did 2 loads and all done by midday.

Fgdvevfvdvfbdv · 22/04/2025 14:15

We were quoted just under 2000 without packing by a national company to move 200 miles, so I think the quote you have got is a rip off.

CloudCustard · 22/04/2025 14:17

I moved last year and someone charged me £80! They moved all my appliances and large items but we used the car to do the smaller boxes.

LogoOnTheFoam · 22/04/2025 14:19

That does seem steep - in Feb we paid £950 to move from a 2 bed terrace to 4 bed house about 15 miles away and that was a last min booking with about 5 days notice...I would try and shop around x

CrystalSingerFan · 22/04/2025 14:21

From 2024, here's my removal costs:

Removal including Packing Service (Stuff going to a ONE bedroom house)
Domestic Transit Insurance
Oxfordshire to Devon (160 miles)
Health and Safety requires an overnighter, which must put the price up!!!

Total VAT: 352.40
Total IPT: 42.29
Total: 2,509.09
Total Due: 2,509.09

They made it clear that this includes "full packing. No unpacking required
Based on all items as per attached household inventory only and not to exceed 629 cubic feet.
Crew to dismantle and reassemble Bed
Customer to move all small items, clothes and kitchen items before our arrival."

They were great! I also learned how to plumb in a washing machine - I was so proud. Good luck.

Misspotterer · 22/04/2025 14:23

I paid a guy £100 last year to move my big items and did the rest myself. I think that's a ridiculous amount for basically loading some goods and driving a few miles.

Thank you. Knew it! Getting alternative quotes. I'm moving a small house too!!

We've paid £80 per hr for a 3 bedroom flat (with very little furniture though) and move within 7.5 miles in London. We've packed ourselves.
Full Luton van and 2 men, they were quite relaxed and we've paid £400 for 5 hrs in the end. For you it will probably be at least 2 "Luton vans" of belongings.
What kind of transport yours will be using?

Ask around in local FB groups, I've got the last 2 man and vans from there.
Though some crazy quotes as well.
Last time I've messaged at least 10 companies recommended on FB/from google maps and only 1 gave reasonable quote.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 22/04/2025 17:24

We moved 2 years ago from a detached 4 bed house to one a similar size. We got 3 quotes, all came in at around £3k.
Edited to add: that was for a full pack. We had 5 men and two lorries. It took two days

Wishing you well - let us know how it goes.

Another cautionary story is a previous move where I got a firm to quote, showed them round my house, said clearly "I want a full packing service" and they saw my entire, un-de-cluttered, shambolic house.

When they turned up on moving day they looked aghast. They'd clearly imagined I'd have done something between then and moving day. I hadn't. The packing took a LOT longer than anyone wanted. Make this clear if you're like me. 😀

user1485851222 · 22/04/2025 21:44

We paid that 2.5k in February this year to move 12 miles, we paid 4.5k 2.5 yrs ago to move 350 miles

Seeyouincourtkeithyoutwat · 23/04/2025 12:14

I moved last year, full packing service including taking down wardrobes and beds and reassembling them in the new house. Moved around 4 miles away 3 bed semi - 2k all in so yes yours is very steep.

Un4732 · 23/04/2025 18:30

I wonder if it's a South East thing? Like an additional tax. Got my second quote in today and wasn't far off the first!!!!

AndSoFinally · 24/04/2025 07:12

We were quoted a similar price by Pickfords about 12 years ago for a local move, so they have always been ridiculous

A different company charged about half the price

Definitely worth shopping around

buriedminion · 24/04/2025 07:44

We recently paid £2k to move a 2 up 2 down into storage. (No packing) But it was from one side of the country to the other so that isn’t surprising.

Roselilly36 · 24/04/2025 07:50

We paid £1800 in 2021, 300miles, 5bed downsizing to 3bed, removal men had overnight stay in local hotel etc.
