Discovered this growing inside our living room!

We moved into this old house 3 months ago. It had been “cosmetically” decorated and we knew we’d be taking on a few problems but this discovery this evening really shocked me. It’s right along the front window but some bramble has literally grown up through woodwork and paintwork indoors!!! I’m terrified of what this will mean when we look into it and have to remedy it … work and cost! Anyone ever seen anything like this? Sad

Surely there's some cream for that??!! .....

Cysco · 07/04/2025 21:41

Did it make that hole? Or has it grown into it?

ChompandaGrazia · 07/04/2025 21:41

Oh my goodness. It’s burst through the wood!

SunMootStars · 07/04/2025 21:45

I’m pretty certain there wasn’t any hole there before… and it has actually burst through the wood! But then I think there must have been some gap for there to be light for it to grow??!! We haven’t furnished in this room yet so not in there all the time. Ugh.

It’s an Audrey Two! Feed Me!

Bonbon21 · 07/04/2025 21:49

Have a look online at japanese knotwood.
Have a look around your neighbours gardens.
If they have/had any they should have told their solicitor and estate agents..
If it is knotweed it is not good news.. I am sorry... but it can get through concrete too.

TheBuffetInspector · 07/04/2025 21:49

Ooer you can see where its pushed through!

It's not a bamboo shoot is it?

SunMootStars · 07/04/2025 22:01

Gosh it’s very small it’s hard to make it out. Please Lord may it not be J Knotweed… I’m not sure who even to call to look into this now 😭 I want to cry.

There’s apps you can use to scan the plant an ND it will tell you what it is!

LittleGreenDragons · 07/04/2025 22:05

Can you photograph what is outside the window?

Bonbon21 · 07/04/2025 22:05

Your local council will advise as it is a invasive species.

EnjoythemoneyJane · 07/04/2025 22:06

You can download a plant ID app and take a picture of it - it should be able to tell you what it is, or what family of plants at least. The one I use was free & is very accurate.

Sunshine1500 · 07/04/2025 22:06

Could be Japanese knotweed, but could also be a plant or tree. I’d rip off the wooden sills and get a better look

Mingenious · 07/04/2025 22:08

Any chance of a less blurry picture?

bilbodog · 07/04/2025 22:10

My in-laws had ivy grow into their living room a few years ago - roots had gone under the bay window wall and it came up inside! See whats growing outside.

It's called RoundUp and you buy it at the garden centre!

i think that's what I would do. But you might have to rip the wooden trim off to see what's inside. Do look outside for Japanese Knotweed, but if you don't see any, try not to worry, just be vigilant.

Yes, I've seen ivy grow though a rotten window frame and into the house.

Ilovemyshed · 07/04/2025 22:15

Need a better picture please. Knotweed doesn’t have serrated leaves though.

godmum56 · 07/04/2025 22:16

I think its grown through the joint and not actually forced its way through the wood. What kind of survey did you get?

Wallywobbles · 07/04/2025 22:18

I thought bramble

FortyNineAndABit · 07/04/2025 22:20

Knotweed shoots are quite distinctively red leaved when young.

Fleaspray · 07/04/2025 22:22

japanese knotweed shoots are very pointy and it doesn’t have leaves like that. It looks like ivy to me. You need to take the trim off and see what the heck is underneath 😫

louem · 07/04/2025 22:22

It doesn’t look like a knotweed leaf, knotweed has a smoother edge

Mwnci123 · 07/04/2025 22:26

Doesn't look like knotweed (I've had knotweed).

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 07/04/2025 22:30

@SunMootStars have you actually bought this house or have you rented it??
