Why don't handymen comes back to finish?

I've had two now come and and do a few hours work and leave the rest unfinished and not getting back to me with a date to finish the work so now I need to get someone else out.

My house is clean, no noise, I pay straight away, don't annoy them by chatting to them and just let them get on with it.

Ok, they are not huge jobs (hence why I got a handyman) probably adding up to 1-2 k of work.

It annoys me that they can just do half a job then piss off to prioritise other jobs for weeks.

I expect the other jobs will bring them more money quicker. It's very poor customer service but ime that's how it goes. I don't think I've ever had work done and not had those doing it bugger off for days without letting me know or telling me a schedule.

Might want to change to only pay half on half done work, other half on actual completion.

I can't get a handyman at all! They sound interested until I tell them where I live (small rural village) and they suck their teeth and say 'oh no, I can't come all the way out there...' It's three miles from the nearest town and I am going to pay them!

I'm getting quite good at DIY now, although my language when I'm doing it is atrocious.

Honestly, our house was refurbished when we moved in and looked lovely.
Within few weeks the handles were coming off and the bannister. I don't even have young kids to blame it on.

The stair rail I put on in my former house stood the rest of time until we move out. I was really proud of that sturdy rail it just looked a bit shit. 😆

Unfortunately they have so much demand for their work that they don’t need to treat customers well. We have mainly had bad experiences with all the tradesmen who have worked on our renovation. Our fencer and electrician are great but everyone else has done a poor job, messed us around and charged way too much.
