Housing benefit question, can anyone help?

I've just put my deposit down to rent a house. One thing I'm a bit unsure of is housing benefit - my current rent is below the maximum allowed amount for a family our size so I've never had to worry. The new place is almost £300 more than I pay here, and I think at least £250 over the maximum they will pay (I'm basing this on figures I got from a pre-tenancy determination a year ago - I have yet to submit one for this new place)

Has anyone been in this situation? Is it guaranteed that they will pay the maximum for my need and then I top up the extra? I can pay the £250 extra but I'm really worried they'll think I'm being greedy getting a larger property than I 'need' and give me less housing benefit. And then I wouldn't be able to afford it!

Any reassurance would be great!!

I don't know about other councils, but in ours, HB is allocated on the need you have for the space.

In other words, if you rent a larger property than they determine you need based on the size of your family/children's genders and ages, etc. then there's a good chance you won't get extra HB.

It is not guaranteed they'll pay the max for your needs, either.
