Our porch light is broken. We need to get an electrician for replacement. How much do you think the work will be? We were ripped off by a tradesman last year so we want to make sure it won't happen again.

If it’s a straight like for like replacement then it could be quite easy - and actually potentially a DIY job. I expect 1/2 a day plus parts. But if the light isn’t working for other more complex reasons then could be more expensive. Strangers on the internet can’t work this out for you. But most tradesmen are so busy there isn’t need to rip people off.

If you buy the replacement light and all that is required is a like for like replacement, I'd suggest not needing an electrician. Use an experienced DIY-er and it wouldn't take more than an hour

Where I am that'd be £35 to £45 for an hours work

I think the daily rate for an electrician is £150.

I save up all the small, non essential jobs, like a broken porch light and wait until I've got 2 or 3 small jobs or a big job - it's a bit cheaper that way.

Thank you for your message.

Our current light keeps flashing. There are only 2 swiches for different settings but don't seem to work. The light is very old. We don't know what's causing this. It can annoy our neighbour who lives on the opposite side as they don't have curtains. The light is connected to entrance light through the wall, which I think it will be more complex job. I would be grateful if I can hear rough cost estimate for the light replacement in this situation.
