We are moving from London to Oxfordshire about an hour's drive, from a 3 bed terraced house...in a couple weeks. No idea of what a good price for moving us would be...anyone?

A lot.

Get at least 3 quotes, and think whether you want them to pack for you. It's more expensive that way, but makes for a much easier move.

I can recommend Moves - they were excellent, efficient and courteous.

I think when we moved in September it was 1700 to be packed and moved from Sussex to Worcestershire, going from a 3 bed (lot of stuff though) to a 5 bed. No idea if it was a good deal as DHs work sorted it all out, but Pickfords did a fab job.

Yeahyeah I used Reliable Removals based in Essex to move from East to SW London last year. They were recommended on here and were fantastic. We moved from a one bed warehouse to a 3 bed house and we used their packing and moving service. Cost was about £1200. If you search on internet you'll find them.

thanks a lot sunshine just contacted reliable as we are near essex...still not sure is worht the price...though, we'd only have to endure one day of hell if we did it ourselves..hmmm

Ah, but if you do it yourselves, you also have to endure weeks of hell whilst you pack. If they do it, you can leave everything as it is, and then sit in the garden whilst they put it all in boxes, wrap china, hang clothes and put it on the lorry.

In 8 years, we have moved three times (2 long distance) with two prof removals and one DIY. The DIY was total hell, and we swore never, ever to do it again.

We used a great firm - Arthur Brown and Sons (based in Romford)

£800 all in (included packing and they re-assembled DS's cot when we got to the new house)

I agree re. DIY. It takes forever - Reliable took 2 days (one to pack and one to move and put everything togther). They will just do a moving service if you'd prefer to pack yourselves. We went out for the day and came back to a packed up house.

about a grand plus or minus couppla hundred depending on whether you want packing. more if you've a bigger house...

I am just a bit of a mad control freak I think. I can't bear the thought of someone packing up all my stuff...I thought the process of packing would mean I would organise it all...but I think I'm being an idiot. We are stressed enough as it is...I am also extremely cheap...but then renting a van will cost at least half as much and mean 100 separate trips...

Just have a look around your bedroom, lounge, ktichen and think about lugging your beds, wardrobes, appliances, tv, sofas, dining table etc It is HELL don't do it.

We moved ourselves years ago, then after we had bought lots of things like all of the above we had pickfords move us, mainly because of the insurance for damage at both ends in case they put a huge hole in the wall of the house we were leaving.

We moved 125 miles, from 3 bed to 3 bed moved out one day, they stored our stuff over night then moved us in the next day. We packed ourselves although now I would get someone to do it. Cost £1200.

Trying to pack with kids is a nightmare and just think about all your cabinets and all the stuff you have in them, it will take you weeks to pack and where are you going to store it all????

If a removal company packs you, you have 2 days of chaos and the second day you are moving out!

PrettyCandles · 13/05/2008 19:36

What's more, what the removal company dismantles, it reconstructs. So they dismantle the beds on the morning of the move, last thing onto the van, first thing off, and rebuild them in the correct bedrooms as soon as they arrive. Vitally important!

They roughly label the boxes as they pack them, at the very least with the name of the source room, and you stand at the front door of the new place saying "Front bedrrom" "living room" etc. You are in control.
