How do I find a good builder?

I have just had several tradesmen through Checkatrade website who have been really good.

Also, when I was after a builder I would knock on the door of people who had just had work done/having work done and ask if they would recommend.

ive had builders by recommendation by asking in builders merchants and by driving round

none of them have been any better and indeed in some cases worse than ones i have taken from yellow pages

it is a minefield

and quite often i have had them be good for me on one job and then be more expensive crap and useless on another
