Hello! i would love to hear from anyone that lives in Markyate. I am in the process of looking at houses and wanted your views please as i tend to over analyse

I am worried that it's too quiet and there's nothing going on, and no movement. Any experience or residents here?

I live very nearby. There's a few good restaurants/takeaways (esp if you like Indian food) and the convenience store is great, but realistically you will be in your car a lot going to Harpenden, Luton or St Albans.

Have you got kids? That will make a big difference too depending on schooling plans

Thanks for your response, appreciate it! Yes i do and they are already at schools with transport sorted. The kids im ok with but i'm currently in a busy area and not sure how to get a feel of the area... I've been a few times and seems nice enough with friendly people, but trying to separate out "normal" anxiety over change v dread over choosing the wrong area and making a big mistake!! I think just sharing and writing it out is therapeutic.

Which school(s) will they be at? Fairly local?

It always seems a nice enough village, with some lovely noises, but pretty quiet compared to some of the others nearby. Flamstead for example has less in the way of shops etc but always gives the impression of more of a community feel, where Markyate feels like somewhere people pass through. But that might be just my impression. Also I might get flamed for this but be aware that the hotel nearby on the A6 is used as for housing immigrants at the moment, and there are often large groups of men hanging around without much to do. That's in no way to suggest they are up to anything they shouldn't be, but it's just quite noticeable.

Thanks! that's interesting, i did notice a group hanging about a few times but didn't think much of it but good to know this..

Yes i agree Markyate feels like pass through but since ive posted this i have come to know that it's got quite a lively community, i think it's history and the fact that it is one long road that goes from one end to the other. Flamstead i didn't like much, it felt too quiet and too busy for me plus i get quite nervous driving on those narrow roads!

Appreciate your insights.
:)
