Tips for new bathroom (especially if you don’t have tiled floors or a fully tiled bathroom).

New bathroom renovation pending. I need your tips and suggestions 🙏

We have inherited white tiled floors which I hate with a passion: nightmare for showing up dirt, freezing cold etc. Ideally I wouldn’t have tiles at all - what to have instead?

I also don’t like the fully tiled look - it’s not necessary is it? I was thinking just tiled around the bath (in built shower) and sink. Is navy paint out of date now…!?

Any general bathroom renovation tips and hints greatly appreciated.

Back-lit, demist mirror and dual-fuel towel rail. We have non-slip flooring and tiling only around wet areas (bath, basin, shower). Zinsser paints - they do an antifungal paint which is perfect for bathrooms. If you don't want tiling on your walls, look at Multipanel instead.

I've got grey slate laminate on my bathroom floor. It's been down for 25 years now although it has started to separate in a couple of places ( nowhere really visible though so it will do for now) Lovely and warm underfoot. I'd have it again.
Plain white tiles with a mosaic strip to dado height and shower screen height around the shower. Walls just plastered and painted deep mauve with ordinary emulsion.
It still looks good if you don't look too closely😀

We have tiled floor, shower area and then tongue and groove panelling painted in a waterproof primer + bathroom wood top coat. Much softer in my opinion and with a decent extractor/ window it doesn’t get directly wet.

I have electric heated towel rail
Vinyl ( cushion floor ) fake tile ( cream and teal ) easy to keep clean and warm ish underfoot
Dark teal subway tiles round the bath / shower
White bath , loo and bathroom sink with cupboard beneath
White painted walls and ceiling
Mirror above sink with light ( which is annoying as it goes off when there’s a power cut and comes back on to surprise us )

I’ve got moss green metro tiles to dado level (other than in the shower cubicle)and dusky brownish-pink paint above. Faded green-patterned tiles on the floor with underfloor heating, heated towel rail, and a bath under the window with a windowsill full of succulents. Wooden shelves, and a cupboard for towels.

I love my bathroom.

We are in the middle of doing bathrooms. We're going to have Karndean on the floor, in a light wood colour. Then it's fully tiled around the bath and half way round the rest of the bathroom with painted wall above it.

@Risheth That sounds lovely, would you be willing to share a picture? We're thinking of similar colours for our bedroom and ensuite refurb.

Pod style shower, no joints or leaks.

If you are not tiling behind the toilet and will use the traditional back to wall seat, make sure you leave some space between the cistern and the wall so no condensation will affect your walls. I've just made that mistake and I worry about the paint job not lasting long.

Got my bathroom done just before xmas and went for terrazzo look on the floor and half the wall. Top part white mosaic and terracotta paint on the ceiling and non wet areas. Looks absolutely lush!
I love my floor tiles. They don't show any dirt!

Panels are the modern standard now although you can still have tiles if you want but it tends to be more expensive and more upkeep.

We have panelling and LVT flooring in our new bathroom.

LVT flooring in an our newish bathroom. Very happy with it. Nice and warm, easy to clean and our pattern disguises the dirt and hairs quite well.

I read that you need fully tiled walls if no window in your bathroom.

We have a north facing small bathroom and the exterior walls get cold, so whatever is on them will most likely get condensation on it, ours runs down it and gets mopped up with a towel. We have part-tiled and painted walls, going for a laminate on the floor, which is currently painted!
So make sure you consider ventilation, heating and extractor fans.
