Shared drives, are they hell?

I am just keeping an eye on the market but am not moving just yet, but I have seen a very lovely house but it has a shared drive.

There are 3 houses that share it, the drive has a dropped curb on an estate and it faces the house in the middle and the two other drives veer off to either side but there obviously is some shared element.

Is it a PITA if it needs maintenance and you all have to decide what to do, and the financing side?

It is a lovely house but stuff like that would really put me off.

Any experience????

if not immediately there is often the possibility of it being hell. I know two people who thought it's fine only for people to change later. It's not always the people who own the house either that's the problem their visitors or if they end up renting it out or their workmen.
