Hi All,

We received a letter from our private landlord saying unfortunately they have to sell their property and we need to leave by 11 December.

They have given 2onths notice for us to find another place.

My question is one of my friend mentioned if we are being evicted then we can apply for council housing. But I'm not even sure if this counts as eviction, does it?

Lots of councils will make you wait till eviction date. If you stay on in the property your landlord will need to go to court to evict you. This can take months esp if you are up to date with your rent. Not great if you will ever need a reference. You may not get a flat/ house and stuck in temp accommodation for ages it’s a real gamble.

ah thank you guys for your responses. I have been living here for 6 years. it is a one bedroom flat but my and DH have pretty much through winter season which is 90 percent of the time in UK had to sleep in the living room because the bedroom is so cold and years later a plumber pointed out the bedroom and bathroom have big insulation gaps which when we asked the landlord they said they couldn't fix. I have a 1 year old and ever since giving birth we've slept in the living room. Me and LO have literally a whole year seen mostly the living room and kitchen. The place has damp and mould too and the landlord never helped out.

It's not as simple as that it depends on your savings and your income. Also your likely to have to go through the full eviction process. That means waiting for bailiffs which can take months. You would need to get your furniture stored somewhere.

Depending on where you live and what the demand is for social housing in your area. You could end up in temporary accommodation for years. Temporary accommodation can be very expensive as well. Alot are also in bad condition. You could be placed in anything from shared kitchen bathroom with strangers. To a self contained flat/house.

All of my temporary accommodations had, mice /rats/ bed bugs

Of course some people are lucky and get good accommodation

In the long term it could be worth ago . But council are allowed to dismiss into private accommodation.

This isn't eviction at the moment. It will probably be in your lease that the landlord can end the lease at any time by giving you 2 months notice (and you might be able to end it with 1 or 2 months notice also). An eviction is a court-ordered removal of a tenant for breach of the lease, e.g. damage, non payment of rent etc.

Eviction is not always breach of lease. That would come under section 8. Section 21 is no fault Eviction. But obviously if the tenant finds else where to live during that 2 months then there's no need for full Eviction
