Replace stair carpet in upstairs flat or not?

We've been freshening up MILs flat to put on the market after she passed away.

It's a 2 bed and won't go for much, plus it needs new windows and a new kitchen.

The entry staircase needs a new carpet. It's filthy and covered in cat hair and is obviously the first thing that will be noticed during viewings. I don't think it's salvageable with a carpet cleaner.

We discussed replacing it, but we've mentioned it to a couple of people, and they've said we're mental and should just rip it out and leave it bare.

The issue is that the stairs are concrete, and the person who laid the carpet used glue, so who knows what mess will be left when we remove it. I've suggested to DH to rip it up and at least put down underlay.

Is it worth replacing?

Don't put down underlay - that would just look weird.

You could try giving it a good clean - that might work. Or just go for a basic, cheap carpet in a neutral colour - something that won't attract any attention.

I suppose it wouldn't do any harm to try and clean it first, it will be very hard work!
