Does anyone know? i'd prefer a stone patio but don't think we can afford it. Decking probably cheaper I imagine but have no idea how long it should take or how much to expect to pay - can anyone help?

Do general builders do this kind of stuff or do I need a garden person?

It varies hugely depending on materials size site etc.get some quotes cheap decking can look dreadful I prefer stone too and its not always more expensive.I think general builders can do it but a gardening co will be more artistic/expert.

anyone got any ideas about actual costs? Have you had it done for you? I'm more interested in labour costs cos obv as NH says materials vary...

has no-one at all ever had this done then? I NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED you so I can convince my DH that we need it done before summer rather than him trying to do yet another job himself that won't get done, or that will be done halfway and badly...

We had a patio built last year. No idea how much it cost, but I'll comment now and then it will be in my Threads I'm On and I'll remember to ask DP later.

i'm getting a monoblocked patio done as we speak - 5 guys and it's £1600

um, another one at about a grand here. A 2 level deck at the top of the garden. Tis quite big though. Took one man 7 days to do.

sophierosie · 14/04/2008 14:09

We did our own decking - single level. Took 2 days and DH and FIL did it - cost us about £300 in materials.

Monkeybird · 14/04/2008 14:20

excellent info - seems like around a grand is gonna be the going rate for the work...

how did you guys find the people to do it? general builders? decking/patio specialists? or wot?

thanks very much

We went to our local wood merchants and they recommeded a carpenter who they used for jobs and he was brilliant.

he put a rail around ours and fitted lights in too - to my design.

Monkeybird · 14/04/2008 14:44

thanks lucycat: that sounds like a good idea (hmm, I'd like a rail and lights too - see I've got deck envy )

Ours was done 2 years ago. Cost £1300. £600 of materials and plant. It is Indian limestone laid in random pattern, with new base (about 400 thick I'd say). And some impressive equipment to compact the various layers as they went. Took 2.5 days. 3 men first day, then 2. They had to dig down about 150mm. It is 13m2, rectangular with a couple of corners missing.

Yes 1100 pounds PLUS materials! Was gorgeous though
