Home insurance claim help

Hi all

We had a leak in our bathroom about 6 weeks ago which has resulted in us needing the whole bathroom to come out, floorboards replaced and everything back in again.

The insurance company are being a nightmare, they've agreed we are covered and we are currently in a hotel because we don't have a second toilet. First of all they asked us for quotes which due to not being able to find contractors and them being fully booked took us 5 weeks.

After we finally got these they decided to send out a surveyor (I think they weren't expecting the bathroom to need completing stripping or maybe weren't expecting the costs to be so high). It took another week for the surveyor to come out and now 2 weeks later we still haven't heard anything.

After chasing and chasing they have told us they need a breakdown of tile costs and we need to go back to the builders for quotes.

I'm now at the point where I'm loosing the will to live, living in a hotel with 2 small children and no signs of the work even starting 😭 the builders who gave us quotes aren't getting back to us and are probably booked up. One of them already couldn't do the work until November!

Is there anything else we can do? We are happy for the insurance to do the work themselves, it is them who keep telling us we will get a fianncial settlement. Can I ask them to send someone out themselves to quote for the tiles? Can I tell them we aren't able to get any further quotes and ask them to take control of it all? Or are we just going to have to start getting quotes again from scratch even if that takes weeks and weeks?

The most annoying thing about this is they are paying £800 a week for a hotel where as if they had just paid out the money when we gave them quotes this could be almost finished now.

Thanks for reading!

Do you need a second toilet?

You misunderstand. Had there been a second toilet in the house they could have stayed at home instead of in a hotel. Not that they need two toilets now.

Thank you @Laura1039i will take a look, I did think about this but thought they wouldn't be interested if we're only talking about a £980 settlement.

@GrazingSheep sorry that wasn't clear, we have been put in a hotel because it was our only bathroom and we don't have a second toilet we could use instead.

Not all insurance companies will have their own contractors, but it is worth asking yours OP and then that puts the responsibility and organisation back on your insurer rather than you.
