What's Waterlooville like?

We're considering moving to Waterlooville to be closer to family but don't know much about the area. Can I please get some info on what areas to avoid etc. Schools aren't an issue

Parts of it are ok, but the town centre is an absolute tip. Horndean is a village nearby which I would say is much nicer

Bit of a dormitory town. A bit ‘nothing-y’. Have you looked at Rowlands Castle?

I'd agree with this. Nice Chinese there, but that's about all. It's got a big Sainsbury and stuff, but so has everywhere else. If you want any other shopping, you go into Portsmouth or somewhere.
(Ex lived in Waterlooville, his parents are in Horndean.)

Are the family in Waterlooville?

Depends what you are after it's a bit of a town with some nicer areas, not somewhere I would be scrambling to move too unless I was retiring and budget was a factor or a new buyer and wanted to renovate.

There are lots of nice villages around, if you list the criterial for the move I'm sure we can help with suggestions.

Do you want town, rural, access to A3 etc?

Denmead, Catherington or Clanfield is much naicer/spenny than the 'Ville, I'm looking there myself

Janey3090 · 15/07/2024 13:22

I know it well and truthfully Waterlooville itself is a bit of a dive.. so I would recommend trying to look at surrounding areas. Definitely avoid Havant, but Horndean and Clanfield are nice, or the village of Denmead is really close and has a nice community feel and plenty of local amenities. Or if you want to be more South and closer to Portsmouth maybe around Bedhampton?

My son and his gf live in the new Berewood estate and I must admit I’ve been really impressed with how quiet it is. Waterlooville town centre is practically derelict- I actually cried when I went there the other day ( I was brought up in Waterlooville and remember it as a thriving place).
DH are considering moving down to the area - some of the roads off the main road to Cowplain are nice - Queens Road for example. You can get a nice house in Cowplain for a reasonable price. We will also consider Denmead and Clanfield.
I know the area really well so happy to help if you find something you want to check.

Waterlooville town centre is mostly a derelict, dilapidated ghost town. This pic is the view from Iceland.

Stick to the nearby villages. Or if you want to live in a town, some parts of Havant are ok, eg Bedhampton.

Lots of people saying Horndean but be aware it’s carved in half by the A3 so you can hear the road from many properties in the village.

What's your budget, what do you need in terms of schools and commuting etc. Are you looking to family to help with childcare and if so where do they live? Waterlooville and Havant are pretty grim but there are nice villages and other areas around.

friendlycat · 15/07/2024 14:30

What’s your budget? Could you afford Petersfield?

Timetodownsize · 15/07/2024 20:25

This is really sad - I lived in Waterlooville for several years and DD was born there so we have happy memories ☹️

SleepingisanArt · 15/07/2024 20:49

Look at Lovedean, Catherington, Clanfield or Horndean. Denmead is not a village, it has a huge number of new builds without the infrastructure to cope (plus it's covered by Winchester Council so good luck if you call the police as they have to come from Winchester even though Havant is much closer!) Waterlooville town centre is dying but apparently there are plans to rejuvenate it (they've been saying that for years though).
